verses for Height & Prowess, 3/5

These are the rhymes I wrote on the beat Height called "Sherwin."

Oh hey fun fact - Prowess picked all these beats!

I’m setting just this line off so you can quote it:

we don't need no water like a on fire cop car
- rap legend Jesse Dangerously

like Method Man, i ran from the cops to cop the tampons

(This is one of those rap similes that refers to a real reference - in this case the fiction of the All I Need video Method Man did with Mary J. Blige - but doesn't even make sense as a boast. I haven't done this specific heroic act. But I would.)

ooh you're Jack Antonoff? cool, I'm not Anton!

(this is a legit genius level line I've had written down for ages waiting for a place to use it, and if you don't think it's that good then umm, ok)

i got my hands on all the can con on Anticon

(Also not true - I've never owned a copy of "Songs I Hate And Other People Moments" by Sixtoo.)

check how many legs at a time i put my pants on:
ONE! and in comes the hawk and the hand saw
to talk to Raheem, I dial a number at random

(Mega Ran AKA Random's real name is Raheem, and he's my real life friend so I can call him like how Homeboy Sandman can call Black Thought and tell him so!)

my head canon of Franz Fanon is handsome with
two hand cannons and a ring like the Phantom
...the fandom didn't care for my cosplay

(So-called fans be always whitewashing in the head canon! It just seems extra ridiculous if you imagine your own facts for a historical figure whose identity is really important... and I heroically took the hit and put myself in the song as the person choosing to believe whatever I want, and then dressing up as it.)

I'm a fem domme dancing down the Canso Causeway

(the extent to which this is not true cannot be remarked upon with any measure of decorum but I like the sound of it and I basically just enjoy making declarations of all sorts, especially when I get to shout out Nova Scotian landmarks.)

When the east is in the house you can not stay blasé
Come equipped, money grip - squad up for god's sake

(The rap group Blahzay Blahzay had a legendary banger in like 1995 that scratched Jeru the Damaja on the hook saying "when the East is in the house," which is part of a longer line in "Come Clean" that continues "... you should come equipped.")

Honey dips in Gotham like Harley Quinn, yoke the Joker

("Honey Dips In Gotham" is a song by The Boogiemonstaz, and Harley Quinn and the Joker are characters from Batman, and they all do a lot of their business in a city called Gotham. "Yoke The Joker" is a super hard song off the first Naughty By Nature album.)

I started sharpening my Parker pen in Nova Scotia

(I do like a Parker rollerball pen, going back to high school in Halifax. Sharpening it would be a mistake however!)

Wow! What a roller coaster, must be this tall to ride, I apologize
Go find yourself a fuckin' hole to crawl inside, baller

(Just being mean to the listener for no reason. For hip-hop.)

Bottom dollar, cauterize a wound with a hot bar
we don't need no water like a on fire cop car
priceless, top star celebrity, divisive
Prowess plus Jesse D and Height is the nicest

(That's the hook! Maybe, just an idea at this point. I am VERY enamoured with "we don't need no water like a on fire cop car" though and I'd love to call the whole song "On Fire Cop Car."

I hope you like it! Let me know!

Remember, there’s more behind the scenes demos, nascent versions, navel gazing, and cool cool raps at my patreon (patreon.com/rljd). I don’t know if it would make sense to replace Patreon with Substack? I have some pretty devoted supporters who are locked in over at the old place and I want to make sure they’re taken care of!
